The discourse surrounding onboarding is extensive and often holds a lot of weight in the tech industry. But what about those important conversations we should have about employees leaving companies? It’s for this reason that I ask everyone on my team, “What is your exit plan?” And you should make it a commonplace question in your teams too.

The reality of today’s market means that people are changing jobs on a regular basis. Yet so many companies still behave as if we were in an environment where people signed onto a job, stayed there for 40 years, and retired.

Using my own experiences, this talk covers how to cultivate a culture that enables conversations around exit plans, how to actually have the conversations once the foundation is laid, and the benefits that both employees and the company get out of it. Using my own experiences I’ll also run through personal examples of places where this has worked, and places where it has fallen short.

You will leave this talk with knowledge on:

  • Tips on how to build a culture that encourages open communication around exit plans
  • Core elements of the healthy discussions we should have about exit plans
  • How to get leadership buy-in to address the topic head-on
