Session 2 : Building motivation
Session overview
As an engineering leader, motivating your teams is one of your biggest priorities – but can also be one of your biggest challenges. And while many people are familiar with frameworks like "Mastery, Autonomy, Purpose" for breaking down motivation, actually applying these concepts to your team can be challenging.

Group discussion prompts
Here is a reminder of the last group session question in case you didn’t have time to complete your discussions:
- By yourself, think about three motivation areas:
- Technical / learning / project motivation
- Cultural engagement
- Purpose / 'why' motivation
- By yourself, rate how well you're doing in these areas from 1–5 (1 = lowest):
- From your perspective
- From the perspective of your team
- In your group, share which of the areas received the lowest score from your own perspective, and what an improved score would look like to you. Repeat thinking about your team's perspective
- In your group, discuss how you can move towards a higher score in each of the three areas
